Before I became a personal trainer, I first started exercising in hopes of completing an obstacle course race. Since I had never been very athletic before then, I was struggling with tiring too fast during workouts.

I consulted a friend who had been a personal trainer for 10 years. She recommended a pre-workout supplement to boost my energy and optimize my workout performance.

What Is a Pre-Workout Supplement?

Pre-workout supplements aim to boost your workout performance, mostly by increasing your energy. Depending on the ingredients, some can improve muscle recovery and increase your focus.

While pre-workout supplements aren’t for everyone, many athletes swear by these products. Keep in mind that pre-workout supplements won’t suddenly make you bigger and stronger. But they can help you stay focused and energized through more intense or prolonged training.

The Pros and Cons of Pre-Workout Supplements

No dietary supplement will fit every person. Pre-workout supplements have some pros and cons of their own.

The Benefits

Taking a pre-workout supplement can increase your energy, endurance, and focus. Enhanced workout sessions inevitably lead to an increase in results and progress.

Many pre-workouts contain ingredients that are popular separately, like creatine and BCAAs. Buying a pre-workout that includes these ingredients can knock out the need to spend so much extra money on other supplements.

The Downside

The primary focus of pre-workout supplements is to increase your energy. This happens by means of stimulants. Most pre-workouts contain caffeine and other herbal stimulants. Here is a good database of caffeine energy drinks.

Some people don’t tolerate stimulants well. Excess caffeine consumption can lead to side effects like high blood pressure, insomnia, and anxiety.

It’s not uncommon to find artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols in pre-workout supplements. These sweeteners can cause intestinal distress, leading to diarrhea, gas, and bloating. If your supplement contains artificial sweeteners, start with small doses to assess tolerance.

Common Ingredients in Pre-Workout Supplements

The list of ingredients from supplement to supplement vary wildly. But, there are some ingredients that are more common than others.

  1. Caffeine
    Caffeine is a stimulant that is commonly found in supplements, tea, soda, and energy drinks. It’s a potent energy booster that can also suppress your appetite.
  2. Creatine
    Creatine 16 is a combination of 3 amino acids called arginine, glycine, and methionine. Your body uses creatine to produce more ATP, which is the main form of energy for your muscles.
  3. BCAAs
    BCAAs 15, or Branched-Chain Amino Acids, consist of 3 essential amino acids called leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These promote muscle growth, reduce muscle damage, increase recovery, and provides muscle energy.
  4. Nitric oxide boosters
    Nitric oxide boosters cause your blood vessels to dilate, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach your muscles. The most popular nitric oxide booster in pre-workouts is l-citrulline (or citrulline malate). Citrulline is naturally found in a popular favorite fruit – watermelon! Citrulline malate 14 may improve your workout endurance with less muscle soreness.
  5. Beta-Alanine
    Beta-alanine works to counteract the buildup of acid that occurs during intense exercise. Without the acidity, you can endure longer, more intense exercise sessions.
  6. L-tyrosine, l-theanine, and l-carnitine
    These ingredients are included for energy, focus, and endurance. L-carnitine 2 can also support the waste-removal process that detoxifies the cells in your body.
  7. Betaine
    Betaine is a popular supplement, especially among bodybuilders. It is an amino acid that boosts protein synthesis. As studies 6 have shown, betaine supplementation leads to increased muscle mass and decreased body fat.
  8. Taurine
    Most people recognize taurine 3 from popular energy drinks. Taurine has several benefits. It can help your body burn fat instead of carbs, improve your mood and focus, and boost endurance.
  9. Alpha-GPC
    When your body breaks down a certain fatty acid found in some plants and soy, it releases the alpha-GPC 10. The presence of alpha-GPC promotes the production of acetylcholine, which is vital to memory and brain health. Studies 4 also show that alpha-GPC supplementation can lead to improved athletic performance.
  10. Theobromine
    Theobromine 19 is mostly sourced from cocoa beans and tea. The molecular structure of theobromine is very similar to caffeine. It also has similar effects to caffeine, such as boosting your energy. While it has stimulant effects, it doesn’t raise your blood pressure like other stimulants. It also doesn’t affect your nervous system like caffeine does.

Tips & Safety

First and foremost, consult your doctor if you have medical conditions or take daily medications. Make sure that the ingredients won’t cause problems with your health or medications.

  • Some stimulants can cause heart problems and high blood pressure.
  • Supplements aren’t FDA regulated, so some squeeze by with shady ingredients or unsafe practices. Some brands voluntarily use FDA approved or certified Good Manufacturing Practice facilities. Some products also undergo 3rd-party testing for quality and safety. Check for approval stamps or information on the product container.
  • Stay informed. Thoroughly research the product, company, and ingredients.
  • Assess your tolerance of caffeine or other stimulants. If someone is sensitive to stimulants, they may get jittery and anxious. Some people may have trouble sleeping after consuming stimulants.
  • If you are routinely tested for banned substances, choose your supplement wisely. Some substances can masquerade under alternative names. For instance, bitter orange extract is popular in supplements because it contains synephrine. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) listed synephrine as a banned substance on their 2019-2020 list 17.

To complement the synephrine, this product includes hordenine. The combination of hordenine and synephrine can promote increased metabolism and energy. Hordenine is similar to the banned substance called ephedra. But, unlike ephedra, hordenine doesn’t cause episodes of high blood pressure.

One ingredient you should be careful with is BioPerine. BioPerine comes from the extract of black pepper fruit, and it has recently gained attention. It enhances your body’s ability to absorb more of the other ingredients. If you take medications, consult your doctor before consuming BioPerine. It can lead to higher concentrations of medication in your system, which can cause serious problems.

This is also one of the best pre-workouts for men thanks to the testosterone support blend it contains! This blend boosts the production of testosterone using zinc, boron, and vitamin D3.
